Claudine Barretto... should be like Gina and Nora

Claudine in Iglot's PR photo

I was a follower of the first airing of Ang TV and even if I don’t like her that time, it was impossible for me to ignore Claudine Barretto, the young sister of newsmaker Gretchen Barretto, among its mainstays but eventually, I find myself watching her shows in ABS-CBN most especially Mula Sa Puso and Home Along Da Riles.

When it comes to talent, it was hard to point that in Claudine  since there were Jolina Magdangal (singer), Rossellle Nava (singer), Lindsay Custodio (singer), Jan Marini (singer), Rica Peralejo (dancer & singer), Guila Alvarez (dancer) and other since she was really into acting.  But maybe being Barretto make a difference so even new in the business she had movies already under Seiko films where she paired with now Manila vice mayor Isko Moreno.

The Rise

I just appreciated her star quality in sitcom Home Along Da Riles top billed by the late Comedy King Dolphy. There she played Bing – the only girl among the offspring of Kevin Cosme (Dolphy) which also included Smokey Manoloto, Gio Alvarez and Vandolph. But when I agree that her potential in acting field and stardom heightened when she did soap opera Mula sa Puso where she paired with her former beau – the late actor Rico Yan.

Her time had come that time and she was pitted against Judy Ann Santos and fellow Ang TV star Angelu De Leon.  Though they did almost similar things like doing soap and being in love teams - Juday with Wowie De Guzman and Angelu with Bobby Andrews, I believe Claudine’s asset was being versatile and you can put her in any roles.  I commend when she did Calvento Files where she portrayed a rape victim thrown in a deep well and Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita where she acted a low class pretty girl who went after rich and decent man played by Rico.  Dahil  Mahal na Mahal Kita is my favorite Claudine’s movie.

Was known as the next Vilma Santos

If I’m not mistaken, she was once considered as the next Star for All Season and it was directly from Ate Vi’s mouth that she considered her as one good versatile actress. Except Nora Aunor, Claudine worked already with movie royals such as Vilma through Anak, megastar Sharon Cuneta (Madrasta) and diamond star Maricel Soriano (Soltera).

Of course, she gathered her fans in acting through her other drama shows such as Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan (with Carlos Agassi), Saan Ka Man Naroroon (where she portrayed triplet and paired with Rico,  Diether Ocampo , and Leandro Muñoz), Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin (with John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Diether ), Iisa Pa Lamang (wih Diether, Gabby Concepcion, and Angelica Panganiban), etc.

Her series Marina made history as the pioneer of fantaserye in Philippine television and if I’m not mistaken it’s also the first series that features a mermaid as the lead character.  Apart from drama show Walang Kapalit, Claudine was also paired with Piolo Pascual in weekly show Buttercup that also starred Diether, Ciara Sotto, Bobby Andrews, Angelu, Onemig Bondoc and Assunta De Rossi.

Taints to her career

If you were follower of their love team or admirer of Rico Yan, you would feel angry with her since there’s speculation that before Yan died she broke up with him because of third party. It was sad that the box office movie Got to Believe was of course their last movie.

It had impact in her status as a young star but I think having good motivation and being with strong talent arm that’s why she surpassed that phase. In fact, I believe she became better and matured actress after that especially in movie Kailangan Kita (with Aga), Milan (with Piolo), at Nasaan Ka Man (with Diether and Jericho Rosales ).

Her career in ABS-CBN became stale especially after giving birth to her biological child Santino. Her comeback late night thriller Sineserye Presents: Maligno (an adaptation of Susan Roces' movie) did not rate as well as her Iisa Pa Lamang (where Angelica became prominent as bida-contravida star as Scarlett).

When she transferred to GMA 7 and became talent of Viva Artists Agency, she gained few projects. She had drama anthology Claudine, movie with Anne Curtis and Richard Gutierrez (where Anne beat them in acting), and tele-fantasya Iglot with fellow former ABS-CBN stars Jolina, Marvin Agustin, and Patrick Garcia.

My review

I believe GMA tried to protect her about the incident involving her, her husband Raymart Santiago and Mon Tolfu. But they couldn’t go further because she gained negative feedback especially when a video of that  incident emerged and circulated. That video was against them than Tolfu. The other side of Claudine manifested in that video, whether  her reason was acceptable or not- it was a major blow in her already struggling career.

Unfortunately, she has no specific projects as her contract with Kapuso network expired and according to some reports it is also impossible for her  to  go back to ABS-CBN because her former talent manager Johnny Manahan is still angry with her  because of her former issues against Panganiban.
Working in TV 5 will give her job but I think will not bring her to limelight again. What she should do is to hire publicist that will do damage control, acknowledge her mistakes and refrain from commenting in the big issues. She can try doing independent films to practice her acting skill and to prove that she still have that talent that people notice before. A star can be unpopular but good actress has always chances to obtain respect, recognition and projects. That’s what Gina Pareño and Nora Aunor are all about.
